What is NDIS?

What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme? (NDIS)

The NDIS is a new way of providing people with a disability better choice & control on how they live their lives.

Funded by the Federal Government, the NDIS provides individualised funding packages that people can use to purchase supports & equipment they need to achieve their goals & live a better life. Through the NDIS, eligible people are provided with a funding package based on an assessment & planning process which identifies reasonable & necessary supports needed for them to live their life. Supports may help you achieve goals in many different areas of your life including independence, community involvement, education, employment & health & wellbeing.

The NDIS gives you more choice & control to get the supports that you need, when & where you need them. It provides you with flexibility to use one provider or many providers. Whatever you prefer! You can even choose a provider who can help you manage your funds if you need help.

Who Is Eligible For The NDIS?

Eligibility will depend on a participant’s age & whether they meet the requirements for disability support. To check if you are eligible for funding under the NDIS, you can use the NDIS My Access Checker tool or contact the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) directly.

Why Choice & Control Australia?

It’s all in the name! The NDIS is all about your choice & your control when accessing your supports both now & in the future. At Job Centre Australia’s Choice & Control program, we listen & work with you & the people who are important in your life to develop & provide person centered, flexible supports that work for you.

Moving To The NDIS

If you have not received funding from the government before, the first thing for you to do will be to check your eligibility for the Scheme. If you are eligible, you will need to apply to the NDIA to become a new entrant into the Scheme. You can do this online through the NDIS Access Checklist or you can call or visit the NDIA office. If you are already receiving funding through the government, the organisation that is currently supporting you will pass on your details to the NDIA who will then contact you to start the NDIS process.

•After you have checked your eligibility, get in touch with the NDIA to organize a meeting to discuss your plan.

•A draft plan is prepared.

•You meet with a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to begin your assessment and planning.

•Your final plan is approved by the NDIA.

•You choose and you control the supports that are provided to you, and the providers you receive supports through.
